solar powered traffic signs

Many construction sites, including highway works zones, are now using solar powered traffic signs to help keep their safety numbers on the rise and their accident numbers low.

Solar powered traffic signs are similar to regular traffic signs only they have one or two attached solar panels that collect the sun’s ultraviolet rays to help generate three or four LED flashing lights which ultimately help distracted drivers see the traffic signs and hopefully heed their warnings such as slow down, stop or detour.

Distracted drivers are the number one cause of accidents today and this includes drivers who insist on driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs; those drivers who are driving while talking on their cell phone or sometimes texting on a cell phone which is extremely dangerous because it takes the driver’s eyes off the road and their concentration is on punching letters on a tiny keyboard rather than on the other cars and possible pedestrians on the road.

There are a countless number of distractions a driver could encounter while driving, eating while driving used to be the number one cause of distractions but it has since been taken over by cell phone use. There are actually people who try to read and drive and not only directions but actual magazines or newspapers which may seem ridiculous to many people but some people think it’s perfectly natural to multitask because they feel they could do something like this and not harm anyone.

Solar powered safety signs are not only for work zones, hospital zones or construction areas; a solar powered safety sign could also be used near schools to help schoolchildren heed the warnings of yield signs and stop signs when crossing the street after school when there are hundreds of parents in cars waiting for them and other children.

Large mall areas could also benefit from solar powered pedestrian safety signs and traffic signs because anywhere people and vehicles need to coexist, there is bound to be accidents because people are distracted – both pedestrians and drivers – and with the LED flashing lights on a traffic sign, the chances of an accident go way down.
