<p>The Internet Marketing world received what seemed like very good news: as of July 2008, the AdWords Keyword Tool is showing actual search volumes instead of shaded green bars.</p>

<p>My Inbox was flooded with messages from all the newsletters I subscribe to, announcing the revolution. One of the marketing gurus went so far as to conclude: &#8220;it probably spells the end for services like Wordtracker.&#8221; Another guru couldn&#8217;t curb his enthusiasm: &#8220;Holy cow! Talk about shaking up the planet!&#8221;</p>
<p>Jim Morris, who is undoubtedly a keyword research authority and the founder of Nichbot.com, celebrated the breaking news on his blog: &#8220;All of a sudden &#8211; there is no longer any confusion about how many times people are searching for a certain keyword phrase on Google.com.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr. Morris included in his post a screenshot of 8 results the Tool returned when he had asked for keyword suggestions for the term &#8220;blogging.&#8221; Here they are: blogging, blogs, blog, blogging software, radio blog, pink is the new blog, blog search, bad girls blog. Three columns follow the keywords list: Advertiser Competition, Approx Search Volume for last month, and Approx Average Search Volume.</p>
<p>Up to July 2008, the Competition column and the two Search Volume columns were using shaded bars, which were supposed to indicate relative volumes, i.e. the more shaded the bar the higher the volume. Since the change was made, the 2 Search Volume columns show actual numbers, but the Advertiser Competition volume is still represented by a shaded bar.</p>
<p>One of the keyword suggestions Jim Morris got was &#8220;radio blog.&#8221; The Competition bar next to this keyword is 3/4 green, representing what looks like quite a lot of competition, right? I strongly suggest you search google.com for &#8220;radio blog.&#8221; You&#8217;ll be surprised to discover there is not even one ad! (Well, perhaps by now there are a couple). Neither when you use broad search nor when you use phrase; neither in the United States nor in Canada or the UK.</p>
<p>The next keyword phrase I checked was &#8220;bad girls blog.&#8221; The mysterious bar is 50% green, representing more than light competition (Or does it? Nobody knows what it actually represents. The question is, why is it a secret? Why doesn&#8217;t Google tell its customers the exact volume of competition?) Anyway, in the case of &#8220;bad girls blog,&#8221; again, there is not even one ad in the English speaking countries.</p>
<p>You may ask &#8220;what is the problem? Don&#8217;t use Google if you don&#8217;t like it.&#8221; Well, the problem is that Google is not just a search engine. Google charged its advertisers over 16 billion dollars last year alone, and an advertiser must rely on the data Google provides him or her in order to set up a good campaign. If these data are extremely inaccurate, there is a good chance most AdWords advertisers are spending their money in vain.</p>

<p>The first tangible Return from an Advertiser?s money, when invested in Space, Is an Inquiry about their product That Inquiry may be verbal to a Clerk over the counter, or-it may be by Mail, in a written,stamped, and posted letter.</p>
<p>Though it is just an inquiry, you are starting to see a return on your investment. This is the first proof your advertising is working.</p>
<p>Now it may take twice or three times as much Conviction in Copy to make a Consumer write an Inquiry for goods, and post it, as it would have taken to make that same Consumer inquire verbally for the goods advertised, when passing a store that should sell them.</p>
<p>But, when he does inquire verbally from a Retailer, there are twice or three times as many chances of substitution, of ?Don?t-keep-it? or ?Here?s-something-better,? as there would have been if that same Consumer had written direct for it by Mail.</p>
<p>The ad which pulls consumers into retail outlets must be as full of influence as profitable mail order advertising. The consumer must be fortified against substitution.</p>
<p>The ad must sufficiently influence the consumer to buy that product or they may go to the retail store and be convinced by the sales clerk to buy the sale item or one in which there is a sales contest. In this case the competition would benefit from our ads. Many proponents of branding, or name recognition are just drawing people into a store to buy substitutes. When Nike started advertising sports sandals Teva&#8217;s sales more than tripled.</p>
<p>The advertisement must therefore give him better ?Reason-why? he should buy our goods than he is likely to hear from the retail Salesman for the competing goods that Salesman may want to substitute. And, it must give him these ?reason-why? in such lucid thought-form that he can understand without effort, so impressively that he will believe our reasoning Claims. It must accomplish this in spite of his natural distrust of all Advertisement statements.</p>
<p>THerefore not more than 1/4 of those who, out of mere curiosity, buy the first package, through &#8220;branding&#8221; ever buy the 2nd or 3rd consecutive package of the same product. Because they do not buy on Conviction In the Meantime, it usually takes about all the profit in the first purchase of any &#8220;branding campaign&#8221; to pay the cost of introducing it to the Consumer through Advertising.</p>
<p>In contrast to general publicity &#8220;Reason-Why Advertising&#8221; or Salesmanship-on-Paper, ROI is predictable.  Consumers need only be convinced 1 time, through &#8220;Reason why advertising&#8221; or &#8220;Salesmanship- on-paper,&#8221; we thus convince him, and more than fortifying him against substitution.</p>
<p>With reason why advertising they begin using the article with an advance knowledge of, and belief in, its good points, his appreciation becomes permanent if the goods merit it. He therefore makes a second, third, and further consecutive purchases of the article as a result of having once read a single convincing &#8220;Reason-Why&#8221; advertisement about it.</p>
<p>The consumer will become a regular buyer of the product because he first read or heard about it in a reason why advertisement. Repeat customers are much more profitable than new ones.</p>
<p>Advertisers who uses mere &#8220;General Publicity&#8221; or branding when they might have all that and, in addition, a positive Selling force combined with it is losing 50 percent to 80 per cent of the results they might have had from the same identical media space. Selling tests made on various kinds of Copy and Mediums have proved this for ?Reason-Why? which is the Heart and Soul and Essence of all good Advertising.</p>

<p>With a recent new version of the External Keyword Tool for Adwords from Google we can now see search volumes for any keyword returned by this tool when we are performing keyword research. Because Google owns the most popular search engine they also have the biggest database of searched for keywords and this fact means this news is extremely important for all internet marketers.</p>

<p>Until now most internet and affiliate marketers will have used paid keyword research tools such as Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery, Wordze and Keyword Elite to find the keyword phrases that internet users are searching for. However these tools only gather information on a very small fraction of the actual searches performed. Google on the other hand has direct access to a massive number of real searches in comparison.</p>
<p>These paid keyword research services try and predict the total searches for each keyword by extrapolating their data, but the numbers returned cannot be considered accurate in any way at all. But because these tools were the only way to get any significant data they were relied on by many if not most internet marketers.</p>

Well, if you are looking to run a very large-scale pay per click campaign, then Google is the most logical choice.  The number of potential customers in the Google enterprise is staggering when compared directly against the leading other search engine services.</p>
